Hall of Fame Class of 2017

Ed Zins – Coach

Ed was an assistant hockey coach to Willard Ikola from 1959 to 1980. Under his co-leadership the Edina Morningside and Edina East teams won 4 State Championships and 15 Lake Conference Titles. Ed also was an assistant football coach for 16 years and baseball coach for 5 years. Ed also served as a Navigator Bombardier in the US Air Force during World War II flying 43 missions in the South Pacific. Ed and his wife of 69 years, Audrey, live in St. Cloud where they enjoy spending time with their 6 children, 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.


Katherine Agustsson Olson – Class of 1998

Katherine was the Athena winner for the Class of 1998, earning a total of 9 varsity letters, 4 letters in both tennis and Alpine skiing and 1 in swimming. Katherine was a member of 4 State Tournament Champion teams, 2 in tennis and 2 in Alpine. Katherine also played 4 years of tennis for the University of West Virginia. Katherine currently serves as the Vice President of Sales and Business Development at CBS EcoMedia. She and her husband, Jesse live in Edina with their 2 sons, Nash and Charley, and are awaiting the arrival of baby number three.  

      

Whitney Taney LaMarre – Class of 2007

Whitney Taney dominated Minnesota high school tennis during her six years as a letter winner at Edina High School, where she went undefeated in both singles and doubles play with an incredible career record of 166-0. Whitney won 3 consecutive State Singles Championships 2005-2007 and was Edina’s Athena winner in 2007. Whitney went on to play 4 years of tennis for the University of Michigan. Whitney recently got married and moved back to Edina with her husband, Ryan.


Dave Mathews – Class of 1968

Dave was the first Hornet tennis player to win five state gold medals -- two individual and three team gold medals at the State Tournament. He was the state doubles champion in 1967 and 1968 with partner Jim Mitchell and part of 3 consecutive Edina state championship teams in 1966-68. During his four years playing varsity tennis for EHS from 1965 to 1968, he earned four varsity letters and never lost a Lake Conference match. Dave makes his home now in St. Louis Park, continues to play tennis and is also an avid fisherman and bow hunter.


Jay Donlin – Class of 1980 West

Jay earned 3 letters in basketball and also played football, tennis and ran on the track team. During the 1978-79 basketball season, Jay tied the single game scoring record with 37 points, was team captain and voted team MVP. His career average was 17.4 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. Jay currently lives in Blaine, Minnesota and is the President of Pumptec Inc. in Anoka.

 

Justin Gaard – Class of 2001

Justin earned 8 varsity letters at Edina High School, 5 in tennis and 3 in basketball. In tennis, he won back-to-back Class 2A singles championships in 2000 & 01 and Team state championships in 1998 and 2000. Justin’s team also took third place honors in 2001. Justin is currently a producer and broadcaster for KFAN, and can be heard as a sideline reporter for University of Minnesota Gopher football games. Justin and his wife Jenny line in Minnetonka with their two boys Jackson and Grayson.


Greg Moore – Class of 1979 West

For Edina West, Gregg played baseball, soccer, hockey and golf. He received All-Conference recognition for hockey in both 1978 and 1979. His senior year, Gregg was hockey team captain and was named to the All-State team in 1979. Gregg went on to play hockey for the University of Minnesota – Duluth and still holds the record of second-top-scorer in UMD’s school history, with a total of 99 career goals. Gregg and his wife Kim have 3 children and live in Lakeville where Gregg is the Co-Founder and Sr. VP of Bulldog Construction.


Ken Reynolds – Announcer

Ken was the public address announcer for Edina soccer for 28 years and for Edina basketball for 19 years calling over 630 varsity level contests. Ken has announced and been emcee at countless tournaments, all-star games, banquets and events throughout the Twin Cities area and in 2005-2006 he was named the Minnesota High School Sports Announcer of the Year by the National Association of Sports Public Address Announcers. For over 20 years, Ken was truly “the voice of the Hornets”. Ken and his wife Holly now reside in Boise, Idaho to be near their two grandsons.


Ann Forrest Dickey – Class of 1988

Ann was a three-sport student athlete, earning 5 varsity letters in golf plus letters in Nordic skiing and Soccer. In golf, Ann was a four-time individual state qualifier, three-time All-Conference player and two-year team captain and member of the 1988 State Championship team. Ann returned to Edina after playing golf at Miami University in Ohio and ultimately rejoined the Edina girls golf team in 2017 as an assistant coach, once again leading the team to the State Championship. Few people can say they won a State Tournament as both player and coach for the same school. Ann recently passed away after a long battle with Melanoma. Ann's husband, Dave, and her 4 children Katie, Elizabeth, Jack and Josh live in Edina.
